On the third Thursday of each month, stand-up comedians from all over Los Angeles head to Pacific Plate Brewing Company in Monrovia to try out new jokes and fine tune older material. Sign-ups start at 7 and the open mic runs from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m..
If you’ve ever wondered how comedians go from a concept to a stage-ready joke, stop in for a beer and some laughs. (And maybe a few groans. ) And if you’ve ever secretly dreamed of trying stand-up, show up, sign up and go up!
Some bits are comic genius and others are complete bombs, but it’s all part of the process. As MC, I keep the show moving and work out my own material along the way.
Even at the open mic level, comedy is still very much a boys’ club. Being a female comic is like having hundreds of little brothers with dubious manners. I’ve learned so much about men, I am not sure I want to continue dating them.
